More teams than ever will participate with a GR Supra GT4 car in 2021, with a bigger presence in European competition and expansion into series on two sides of the world.
The GR Supra GT4 car is developed by TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Europe, home to TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s works teams in the FIA World Endurance Championship and the FIA World Rally Championship, and already enjoyed title success in its debut season last year.
Those successes have inspired a concept change for the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Trophy, which will now reward teams achieving class wins and podiums in selected European series.
In 2020, the GR Supra GT4 took part in 85 races, achieving 26 class podiums and 12 class wins. With further experienced teams joining the GR Supra GT4 roster, 2021 is expected to deliver even more excitement and success in more than 10 championships around the world.
Rob Leupen, Managing Director TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Europe: “After a good start with five European cars in 2020, the GR Supra GT4 will become a global player in GT4 racing this year. We are excited to welcome new teams to the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing family and see the GR Supra GT4 car racing on iconic tracks across three continents. We sincerely thank all our customers for their trust; they provide valuable input as we constantly aim to make ever-better cars and deliver an ever-improving service. On top of that, we are delighted to again offer our European GR Supra GT4 and GT86 customers the chance to compete for prize money in the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Trophy. This is a sign of our commitment to customer motorsport and to those teams who pit their trust in our products. We hope all our customers have a safe, exciting and successful season.”
Europe: Italian and Polish teams to join CMR, Ring Racing & Speedworks
All three customer teams who introduced the GR Supra GT4 to European circuits in 2020 are expected to continue their programmes in the new season.
Following an impressive debut season, the Classic & Modern Racing (CMR) team is again targeting to take part in the GT4 European Series and the French GT4 Series with a multi-car entry, wearing TOYOTA GAZOO Racing France colours in the domestic series, where it aims to retain the Am Cup teams’ and drivers’ titles won in 2020.
In Germany, Ring Racing has confirmed a two-car entry in the DTM Trophy while one car will additionally focus on the team’s home track, the Nürburgring, competing in the Nürburgring Langstrecken Serie (NLS) and the Nürburgring 24 Hours.
Over in the UK, Speedworks Motorsport will once again take on the challenge of the British GT Championship with one car competing in one of the most diverse GT4 championships in Europe with race distances ranging from one to three hours.
New competition will come from Polish TOYOTA dealer Chodzen who will team up with Italian SVC The Motorsport Group to field a brand-new GR Supra GT4 in the GT4 European Series, taking on direct competition with CMR.
Thanks to Duell Team, the GR Supra GT4 will also join the Italian GT Championship, which features sprint and endurance races on iconic tracks such as Monza, Imola and Mugello.
That is not necessarily the final count of GR Supra GT4 competitors in Europe, with further customers likely to join the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing family during the year.
North America: Daytona debut, cars to run in three championships
Across the Atlantic, the new season started with a bang. The GR Supra GT4 made a positive American debut in January at the iconic Daytona International Speedway.
TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Latin America entered the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge season-opener, a four-hour competition held on the eve of the 24-hour race. The Supra lead the race before finishing a creditable seventh overall in a 41-car grid.
As well as the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, GR Supra GT4 cars will also join two further North American GT4 series, the SRO Pirelli GT4 America and the FEL Sports Car Championship in Canada.
Japan: Super Taikyu winners Rookie Racing to face new GT4 competition
In Japan, the 2020 season ended with Rookie Racing winning the Super Taikyu Series’ SP-1 title at the penultimate round after earning the car’s first 24-hour victory at Fuji earlier in the year.
While Rookie Racing will continue its programme, new teams have announced their participation with the GR Supra GT4 in both the Super Taikyu Series as well as the Inter Proto Championship.
TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Trophy: new concept rewarding wins and podiums
With the number of GR Supra GT4 teams growing, the Europe-wide TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Trophy, supported by the GR Supra GT4’s Official Lubricant Supplier RAVENOL, sees a change of concept for the new season.
In 2021, the competition will reward teams achieving outstanding results in more than 130 races and classes including all rounds of the GT4 European Series, British GT Championship, DTM Trophy, French GT4 Series, German Rally Championship and Nürburgring Langstrecken Serie.
Staying true to its origins, all TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Europe customer cars – the GT86 race and rally cars as well as the GR Supra GT4 – are eligible to take part. Entry to the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Trophy is free of charge and all entrants benefit from discounts on spare parts.
Prize money will be awarded to teams scoring wins or podiums in their class. GR Supra GT4 teams receive EUR 5,000 for an overall win, EUR 4,000 for a class win or EUR 2,000 for a class podium. GT86 teams can benefit from EUR 2,000 for a class win or EUR 1,000 for a class podium.
A special incentive is offered for the Nürburgring 24 Hours where GT4 teams can get EUR 10,000 for a class win or EUR 5,000 for a class podium and GT86 can stock up their prize money by EUR 5,000 for a win or EUR 2,500 for a podium.
