- Hermann Gassner Jr leads with 289 points
- “Brody”, Jacques Derenne and Olivier Muytjens win in the SP3 class at VLN5 and VLN6
- Alex Fielenbach in third place still within striking distance
Hermann Gassner Jr extended his lead in the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Trophy with two consecutive victories at the wheel of his GT86 CS-R3.
His first place in the R2/R3 class at the Wartburg Rally earned him 45 points but it was his special success at Rally Germany, a round of the FIA World Rally Championship, which really paid off. Due to the event’s long distance and strong competition, Hermann’s class victory delivered 65 important points in the Trophy battle.
“We fought against well-known teams for three days at Rally Germany so I am really happy about the class victory,” he said. “We had some issues at the start of the season but everything has been on an upward curve since then, as shown by our victories on the last three rallies.”
“Brody”, Jacques Derenne and Oliver Muytjens of Team Pit Lane – AMC Saint Vith have also been successful as the fight for Trophy honours heads to the finishing straight; they earned 77 points in their GT86 CS-Cup from the SP3 class in the fifth and sixth VLN races.
That means they currently lie in second place with a total of 206 points in the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Trophy standings. Alex Fielenbach holds third with 157 points, following a healthy haul of points in his GT86 CS-V3 thanks to consistently good positions in the RCN and the VLN.
TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Trophy participants can registers up to 10 results across all series in 2018 and must register a minimum of five. At the end of the season, the winner will receive prize money of €35,000 and a Toyota C-HR car provided by TOYOTA Deutschland. Second place earns €25,000 while the third place takes home €20,000.
Hermann Gassner Jr comments: “We committed to the GT86 CS-R3 right from the beginning of the project as we were convinced about the performance of this car right from the start. In particular, the low center of gravity and the almost unbreakable brakes pay off again and again. Victory in the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Trophy would be the icing on the cake of our motorsport season.”
Florian von Hasselbach, Senior Engineer Customer Motorsport at TOYOTA Motorsport GmbH, added: “Of course we are very pleased that so many TMG customer vehicles are taking part in the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Trophy. The top three cars in the standings are one each of our available GT86 race and rally cars so that shows the classification system must be working well. A season highlight has certainly been Hermann Gassner Jr winning his class on Rally Germany to further increase his lead in the Trophy rankings. Olivier Muytjens, on the other hand, drove the best lap time ever for a GT86 CS-Cup on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, 9mins 40.019secs, and that was seriously impressive as well!”
