- TMG GT86 Cup starts on 25 March into the fifth season
- Three new teams in TOYOTA‘s one-make cup
- Milltek Sport gives international flavour
This season, there is a fresh wind sweeping through the TMG GT86 Cup. While the established teams are preparing their GT86 CS-Cup cars for the new season, three new teams have expanded their racing activities on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife to join the TMG GT86 Cup.
With the British Milltek Sport team taking part, the TMG GT86 Cup is now more international. The brand new GT86 CS-Cup will be piloted by Lucian ‘Luke’ Gavris and Dale Lomas. Both bring years of racing experience on the Nordschleife and will occasionally be supported by the British GT3 star Tom Onslow-Cole.
“We have had a great response to our VLN participation in 2016,” said Steve Pound, Managing Director of Milltek Sports. “It was very exciting, especially our two guest starts in the GT86 Cup. We immediately felt at home and are very interested in strengthen the relationship between TOYOTA Motorsport GmbH, the Nürburgring and Milltek Sport.”
In addition to the Cup races, Milltek Sport is also planning to use the GT86 CS-Cup for the 24 hour races at the Nürburgring and at Silverstone.
Another addition to the TMG GT86 Cup grid is Adrenalin-Motorsport, a long-time and successful VLN team. Team boss Matthias Unger himself was VLN champion in 2008 but now the self-employed car dealer concentrates entirely on his role as team boss. “Our team is growing steadily. We are using six cars in different VLN classes in 2017,” he said.
The Adrenalin-Motorsport GT86 CS-Cup car is shared by Niklas Steinhaus and Ulf Wickop. While Steinhaus has been active for a long time with Adrenalin-Motorsport in the VLN, Wickop is preparing for his first full VLN season. “I only have a certain budget for my motorsport hobby. Therefore I just want to drive as much as I can. The good price-performance ratio in the TMG GT86 Cup offers me the best conditions,” Wickop explains. Steinhaus is looking forward to getting to know the TMG GT86 CS-Cup as a driver: “So far, I have only experienced the car on the track and especially in the corners it is very quick. It seems that even with a slightly more powerful car the GT86 CS-Cup is very strong.”
Alexander Müller, driver and team chef of AM-Motorsport, the third new team in the TMG GT86 Cup, is still looking for a driver for his Cup assignment. He said: “My friend Jan Focke will support me at some races in the cockpit, but unfortunately he is not available for the whole season.” Müller, who has driven with his team mainly in the RCN Nordschleife series, knows the VLN already from some guest starts. “I’ve looked a bit around last year in the TMG GT86 Cup. The sporting level is high and the mood among the teams very friendly. In combination with the attractive overall package of TMG, the Cup offers the best conditions for the VLN entry,” says Müller who hopes to find a fellow competitor with Nordschleife license before the first test day on 18 March.
