TMG GT86 Cup: 2013 champions again in title fight

It’s time again; the break in the VLN season after the Nürburgring 24 Hours is over. On the 24 June, the VLN season continues with the third race so the battle in the TMG GT86 Cup begins for the leaders Milltek Racing. With their victory in the season opener and a third place in round two, the Cup newcomers are leading TOYOTA’s one-make cup with 34 points.

Leutheuser Racing & Events is leading the pursuit of Milltek. The 2013 Cup champions returned with new drivers this year after sporadic outings in 2016. “Better than third place” is the ambitious goal of team boss Christian Leutheuser for the third race of the season.

A reason for Leutheuser’s optimism are his drivers Jan Sluis and Dirk Leßmeister. “Both are experienced endurance drivers and are feeling very comfortable in the GT86 CS-Cup car. They have a good race overview and are able to drive consistently good lap times even over a long period of time,” says Leutheuser.

Also in the role of the hunter are last year’s Cup champions of Toyota Swiss Racing. Manuel Amweg and Frédéric Yerly came back into title contention in round two after they had to retire in the season opener. The Swiss team also reduced their deficit via Yerly’s pole positions for both races this season, earning four bonus points which helped his team to 21 points and third overall.

“Unfortunately, we have already used our scratch result in the first race. This puts us in a more difficult situation,” explains Manuel Amweg. “It is therefore important now to reach the race end safely to always score points. So we do not necessarily take too much risk for a victory.”
