TMG GT86 Cup: From the hunted to the hunter

  • Defending Cup champions Toyota Swiss Racing Team in an unusual role
  • Newcomer Milltek Racing wants to defend its standings lead
  • Leutheuser Racing & Events aims to win the second race of the TOYOTA’s one-make cup

The Toyota Swiss Racing Team, in 2016 the dominating team in the TMG GT86 Cup, has found itself in the unusual role of the pursuer. After an accident in the first race of the year, the Swiss team gained only two points courtesy of their pole position. Compared to newcomers Milltek Racing, who won the season start, it means that the Toyota Swiss Racing Team is already 18 points behind in the championship.

However, it is exactly this pole position which makes the Swiss champion Manuel Amweg optimistic: “My new team colleague, Frédéric Yerly, showed that he had the fastest lap times in his first assignment in the TMG GT86 Cup. So we feel confident to show the speed and to compete again for victories. Now we have to implement this to the race and score points.”

Milltek Racing, took their first victory in the TMG GT86 Cup and thus the overall lead in the 2017 season so far. However, the team are realistic despite that success. “We had a lot of luck,” commented driver Lucian Gavris. “We were fast on the road, but without the bad luck of our competitors, we probably would not have won.” Especially because not everything went according to the plan of the team. “When I first took the wheel from Dale Lomas, he forgot to connect my radio. So I had no contact to the team while driving. When I came back to my pit stop, I also stopped too far from the refueller, therefore it took a while to align with them again,” Gavri explained. “This is probably called ‘learning by doing’.”

Leutheuser Racing&Events also showed a very good performance in the first race. The team, who made their Cup debut in the first year of the TMG GT86 Cup in 2013, started the first race of the season with two Cup newcomers as drivers. In the lead, however, the team had to make an unexpected pit stop due to a tyre damage and ultimately ended the race in third. But the goal for the second round of the season is clear says team chief Christian Leutheuser: “We want to make up for the lost victory!”
